Update - summer 2023

Recently I have decided to give Flozbox a new purpose. In the past I would post every painting I created, but the galleries were getting too large and difficult to manage. After all, I have done hundreds of paintings in the last 20 years! ~500 I believe, and I’m not proud of many of them! So why show them? Many are sold, some have been painted over and some have been destroyed!

Now the aim of Flozbox is to showcase only a small selection of paintings to give a general idea of what I do, and why I do it.

I like to make sure I have a sketchbook with me at all times, not only to practice and improve my observational drawing skills, but also to keep a visual diary of my life, to capture inspiring moments or moods that could otherwise slip by. I often find myself in places and situations which either inspire me or move me to record the moment for memories sake.

Then of course there are those situations in which you find you have a spare 10 minutes or half an hour for some reason, maybe waiting for someone or something, which is more than enough time for some doodling fun!

I’m over the moon to see that my daughter also enjoys sketching at any given opportunity! I love these bar sketches. (Aged 6.5)

Contemporary cubism, cubist still life, oil painting

Bar life IV Cubed. Oil on canvas. 2014. 26x26cm

I sometimes get bored with painting things the way they are! So I like to play with ways of seeing. Cubism has always fascinated me, and as my work has progressed I have begun to enjoy exploring different ways to portray my ideas.
There seem to be endless possibilities for every subject once you begin to distort the way in which you view it.

For the same reason I like to go a little abstract from time to time (quite a lot). The process becomes far more free and inconsequential.

Many of my abstract paintings take on a sculptural quality, showing inspiration from the likes of Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi. I enjoy the idea of playing with elements that would more commonly be found in a 3 dimensional piece; such as the sense of wieght, balance and negative space.

Painting commissions

As I mentioned on the homepage, I am quite particular about the type of commission I will accept these days. Gone are the days of painting portraits from photos, or taking on pieces just because I need to pay the bills.

I have full time work commitments and a family, so time is not at my disposal. I am willing to accept commissions with an open deadline, but no more quick last minute birthday presents!

If you would like to discuss a possible commission, or enquire about paintings already created, please feel free to contact me on the link below. Many thanks.

The occasional portrait

Contemporary art, portrait, oil painting

I don’t often attempt real portraits, but it’s something that I am quite interested in looking into. I just need to find people who are willing to sit for me, as I am most certainly not interested in working from a photograph; there is no joy in that. I practice from time to time with a self portrait, but I have done too many already, and I don’t take pleasure in looking at myself for so long!

Figurative painting

Contemporary art, oil painting, figurative painting

I have always loved to draw the human form. The different shapes, sizes, postures and movements provide an endless source of inspiration, and I find the painting of such sweeping natural curves to be very therapeutic.

Now that I have a little more free time available I am planning to find somewhere where I can practice life drawing again.

Still life

It’s been many moons since I did any real still life painting. I enjoy it, but mostly for the sake of practice. The outcome is not usually something I would usually want to hang on my wall!

I do love to paint flowers, though not often from life. The extraordinary colours, and the intricate patterns designed by nature in such a seemingly haphazard way never fails to blow my mind.
